Why did the Goanna Cross the Road?

While we were in Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory of Australia, we saw some interesting animals up close. We had stopped at a bird viewing location and were out of the car where Mark had walked a little ways down the road and I could see something in the ditch just behind him... At first glance, I thought it was a baby crocodile... but on closer inspection and as it came out of the ditch and crossed the road, we saw it was a goanna (large lizard). Apparently he just crossed the road to be noticed... as he made it across, he stopped and turned backed and did quite a lot of posing for us.

As I recall ... he was a very friendly lizard who enjoyed having his picture taken.
